What are the lowest cost energy saving measures for motors?

Switching a motor system off using simple controls when not needed gives the most rapid savings and such opportunities are often simple to identify and install.  Examples are:

  • Time switches to match HVAC operation to occupancy times.
  • Load sensors on escalators to switch off when no passengers are detected.
  • Humidity sensors on kitchen extract fans to switch off when the humidity has fallen to an acceptable level.
  • Hook switch for welding torch holder so that the welding booth fan only comes on when the welding torch is lifted for use.

In addition, periodically removing dirt from the inlet fan and the motor body is recommended in order to reduce motor temperature and hence losses.
