[CuAcad17] Copper as an engine for economic development in the DRC

The Copper Academy welcomes Cina Vazir and Abdurrehman Naveed to present their work on “Value Amidst Transition: Evaluating Strategic Opportunities for Value Addition in the Democratic Republic of Congo”.

The webinar will cover their research findings on how copper can act as an engine for economic development in the DRC, with a focus on the midstream and downstream parts of the copper value chain. Developing a copper value chain in the DRC presents both significant opportunities and formidable challenges. Using a capabilities framework to analyze the merits and demerits of value addition, the authors aim to go beyond conventional narratives of moving downstream. Through the capabilities framework, the authors will outline the copper opportunity in the DRC, its high-level feasibility, and key risks. The webinar will conclude with the role government can play to facilitate attractive midstream and downstream opportunities.
