Description
Within the framework of the work on digitalization performed by the IEA 4E Electric Motor Systems Annex (EMSA), one action has been to investigate how digitalization of electric motor systems could help improve energy efficiency of operations in industry. To gain a better understanding of the challenges and possible solutions the industries face concerning digitalization, interviews with relevant companies in that field have been carried out. Furthermore, eight case studies in four countries covering all major motor systems applications were collected, showcasing energy savings achieved through the usage of digital technologies. These activities also led to technical recommendations for end users on how to digitalize their motor-driven systems.

Key takeaways
- Digitalisation is an enabler to create transparency in terms of when and how energy is being used. This is a crucial first step when it comes to the optimisation of motor systems’ operation.
- The potential savings vary greatly, depending on:
- Is the information that is provided through the digital solution used to implement
optimisation measures? - What is the starting point, i.e. is the motor system already optimised to some level (e.g.
use of a VSD)?
- Is the information that is provided through the digital solution used to implement
- Energy savings are not always the primary driver but rather a side effect of the optimisation. Non energy benefits play a more decisive role.
