Description
Join us for an insightful presentation on the 4E EMSA Motor Systems Tool, where we'll explore its key features and functionalities. The webinar will begin with an introduction to the tool's core components and structure, followed by an in-depth discussion on the loss models and algorithms it utilizes. To bring the tool's capabilities to life, we will walk through one or more real-life examples, demonstrating the calculation process and operational flow in action.
This session is designed to give participants a clear understanding of how the 4E-EMSA Motor Systems Tool can enhance their work and optimize motor systems.

Key takeaways
- The EMSA Motor Systems Tool (MST) is an independent calculator designed to optimise complete motor systems by using impartial models of standardised components to determine system efficiency at any duty point.
- Target users include engineers, machine builders, energy consultants, and others focused on motor systems optimisation.
- Launched at EEMODS 2011, the MST has since been downloaded 4,500 times.
- It models the entire motor system, from power supply to application, calculating all partial efficiencies and total system efficiency from a single known duty point.
- The tool dynamically calculates changes in speed, load, or components, providing instant results.
- Standardised models are included for pumps, fans, hydraulic pumps, air, and cooling compressors (including from Ghent University, IEC, and AMCA).
- The MST allows users to simulate annual costs, compare energy demands before and after system changes, and evaluate systems under EU eco-design standards.
- Regular updates align the MST with new legislation. Upcoming updates will incorporate the EU Ecodesign regulation 2024/1834 for fans (adopted 3 July 2024) and expected updates for water pumps by mid-2025.
- Developed on LabVIEW and running on Microsoft Windows, the tool features a visual dashboard for easy simulations. Results and settings can be exported as an HTML page.
- For Motor/Drive unit selection, induction, permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors are available. Users can manually input nameplate values, with a built-in validation to prevent unrealistic entries.
- Real-life examples demonstrated:
- Pump application: With minimal input, the tool provides a complete analysis of the entire pump system.
- Fan application interpolation: Efficiency at any duty point is extrapolated from 12 representative duty points based on detailed fan curves, allowing full system calculations.
- MST is part of a suite of tools covering air compressors, vacuum systems, hydraulic systems, and soon ventilation systems.
